Tuesday Toodles

Can you believe it's the last day of June? It seems like only yesterday I was shoveling snow. Actually, that's a lie. Since I live in an apartment, I don't shovel snow. I kind of like that. But, anyway, tomorrow's July, which means we're a little bit closer to my annual vacation that gets me out of the office for the bulk of August. I'm in need of a vacation.

Today is Wilco day. But more on that later.

Anyway, I haven't posted since Michael Jackson died. There's really not much to say that hasn't been relayed ad nauseam over the last few days. I mean, he's dead. Heart attack. Could be something more sinister. Probably not. He had issues. He may have liked children too much. He was, absolutely, a musical genius and inarguably one of the two biggest musical icons of my life. A significant portion of people my age, including myself, can call "Thriller" the first album they ever owned. That's something. One interesting thing you may want to check out, though? Lisa Marie Presley's blog entry about the whole shebang.

I always, naively, thought that the actors starring in Broadway shows had to be able to act. Not the case with this one, I guess.

I just got this in the mail last week, and let me say that I'm surely smitten. How could I have forgotten how awesome this show was? I mean, it's badly acted and everything, but, man, it makes me think of my childhood. Oh, OK, I admit it: I can't get through more than one episode at a time, but still ...

A movie about a "Real World" castmate? Who would have thunk it?

Here's a pretty good interview with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy (that's his pic above). Of course, "Wilco (The Album)" is out today. Look for my review in Friday's Weekend section.

This is an A-Z story about which TV shows are missing from DVD. I would like to add that, for some reason, "Ed" is missing. I loved that show.

And I guess that's all I got for today. In honor of the Wilco record, here's a performance of my favorite tune from the disc:

Iowa State Fair to have tribute to Michael Jackson with a butter statue of the King of Pop

By Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It's the King of Pop — in butter.

Iowa State Fair organizers announced Tuesday that they will have a statue of Michael Jackson made of butter. The sculpture will be on display along with the annual butter cow, a popular attraction at the event.

Both will be in a 40-degree cooler throughout the fair from Aug. 13 to 23 in Des Moines.

Fair organizers say the butter sculpture is a tribute to the pop icon who died at the age of 50.

Jackson performed at the fair twice with the Jackson Five in 1971.

Pat,

I've been wishing for the complete series of Ed on dvd for quite some time. Simply put, Tom Cavanagh was meant to play Ed just like a certain former roommate was meant to play in the woods with the goobly goblins. Anyway, I've read that the hang up with releasing the dvd is with the licensing of the soundtrack. As you remember, Ed used (then)current music in all of its episodes (the theme song was a Foo Fighters song). I guess the producers have calculated that it is not worth it to license those same songs for the dvd release, and too costly to go through and strip them from the episodes and recut with generic soundtrack music.

In my opinion, Ed was the best hour long comedy/drama of the last 10 years.

That's my two cents.

Hugs and kisses,
Caldor.

Caldor,

You are very correct about the music holding up "Ed." It's the same reason why it's taken a poopload of time for "Thirtysomething" to come out, but that'll actually get released in a month, so there's hope.

Also, do you remember how "Ed" stopped using the Foo Fighters song for one reason and instead used "Moment in the Sun" by Clem Snide. That's how I found out about Clem Snide and they've been one of the my favorite bands ever since.

As for a certain roommate who likes to play in the woods, he's married now. Did I tell you I ran into him completely out of the blue at a wedding we both didn't belong at?

That's all I got. I am going to write about the REO Speedwagon/38 Special show I just saw now.
